Heidelberg University working again with Brähler interpreter technology
For many decades Heidelberg University has been one of the most successful training facilities for conference interpreters. Its graduates work both simultaneously and consecutively at the highest level in federal ministries, international organisations such as the United Nations and the European Union and, as freelancers at meetings of supervisory boards, balance sheet press conferences or at specialist scientific conferences.
The historic building at the heart of Heidelberg has now again been equipped with state-of-the-art interpreting technology enabling it to maintain its place among the leading institutes. Furthermore, besides the familiar languages English, French, Italian, German, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish, it can now offer new ones, such as the MA study course, Conference Interpreting in Japanese.
The Institute for Translation and Interpreting at Heidelberg University worked with a system from Brähler ICS. Owing to present-day requirements and technological progress an invitation to tender was issued for the renovation and extension of the system and a contract was awarded. The existing cabin concept is to be retained and the equipment brought up to the state of the art. Great importance was attached to installing up-to-date interpreting technology, which has already proved its reliability at a very wide variety of events.
Brähler ICS installed the successful and extremely flexible CDSVAN system with its real-time digital audio processing. The DOLV interpreter console was developed in consultation with interpreters and its tidy operator interface makes it extremely convenient to work with.
With this interpreter system students can be realistically prepared for their professional life. The instructor can listen to each student individually; the contributions are recorded in MP3 and transferred to the institute's own server. Therefore these files are available to the students in digital form for further practice or improvements.
Dr. Christoph Stoll, who heads the course of studies for interpreters at the Institute for Translation and Interpreting (belonging to the Faculty of Applied Linguistics and Cultural Studies, IASK) is proud that, according to multiple AIIC surveys among over 19,000 conference organisers and 3,300 conference interpreters, around one fifth of all interpreters working with "German" in Europe studied in Heidelberg.
